"We have all cried for things we have lost – for first love, for financial losses – but the cry for losing your country is something you can never forget.”
Naimat Zafary - MA student in Governance, Development and Public Policy
It is difficult to express the sadness we have all felt watching the desperate situation unfold in Afghanistan.
Since the evacuation, Sussex has welcomed five talented Afghan students to campus, including Naimat. A further four are in bridging hotels across the UK, and three more are currently overseas and hoping to make their way to us soon.
These students are arriving at Sussex under very different conditions to those they had planned for; and we know from experience that students who are displaced or cut off from their home country can have diverse and complex needs.
In keeping with our status as a University of Sanctuary, we at Sussex are doing everything in our power to help these students feel welcome and safe, and to support them in rebuilding their lives:
Your gift will help to give our Afghan students the best possible start at Sussex. Every pound donated will send a clear message that we stand with them during this incredibly difficult time.
“When people say ‘welcome to your new home’, it touches your heart.” - Naimat
Please give whatever you can afford to support these students as they try to rebuild their lives.
100% of your donation will go to helping students like Naimat (read his story here)
